The choir is truly representative of the force with a membership consisting almost entirely of serving and retired police officers, serving and retired members of the support staff and the special constabulary. We want to maintain the tradition of choral singing in a pleasant social environment and we do so under the professional leadership and tuition of our musical director Alison Howell, accompanist Julie Payne and deputy accompanist Gemma Leach.
We also want to share that musical tradition with the community, raise funds for local organisations and to act as ambassadors for the force. Away from the formal concerts however there is nothing the members like better than to sing and impromptu performances have taken place on cross channel ferries, in motorway services and in the odd pub or two.
The choir's repertoire covers a wide range, from medieval and classical choral music, much loved ballads and operatic choruses to arrangements of popular songs and songs from stage and film musicals. The choir enjoys a high reputation for its quality of performance for which it has been awarded numerous cups and certificates at choral competitions. Major concerts with other choirs and bands have produced lasting friendships both in the United Kingdom and abroad and forms an important part of the choir's activities.
New members to the choir are always warmly welcomed and essential to the continuation of the musical tradition that has been proudly maintained over the past thirty years. You do not have to be an established singer, many current members were not before they joined, but if you enjoy music and good company they will be pleased to hear from you - better still why not come to a rehearsal at the lecture theatre in the training school at Police Headquarters, Portishead on a Monday evening, starting at 7:30 pm. If you are from a force other than Avon and Somerset, perhaps retired and now living in the area, and would like to join, you will also be very welcome. We do also welcome some choristers without a police background. Contact us. less
