It is situated on the south coast of the County of Cornwall, the area of England protruding into the Atlantic Ocean facing North America. Male voice singing is traditionally very popular in the county, there being 33 federated choirs numbering 1,300 singers out of a total population of nearly half a million.
The choir was formed in 1974 and quickly matured into one of the leading and largest male choirs in Cornwall. It now has over 55 members including several founder members.
The choir gives around 25 concerts each year, raising many thousands of pounds for various charities. On the 10th July 2010 they celebrated their 900th public appearance. During a concert tour of Gibraltar in 1979 they performed in the famous St. Michael's Cave. Subsequent tours have been to Holland/Northern Germany, to the Black Forest area of Germany on two occasions and in 1990 the choir had a 14 day tour as guests of the Niagara Wine and Grape Festival in Ontario, Canada. In 1996 they toured Georgia, USA and in 1998 the Dordogne area of France.
In 1977 they sang the award winning "Song of Cornwall" at the first Song for Cornwall competition. Since 1980, five commercial recordings have been made. They also sang in 2009 for the BBC "Songs of Praise" from Truro Cathedral, accompanying the acclaimed singer Hayley Westenra.
The choir proudly represented Cornwall at the International Trade Fair in London. On the same day they sang on the College Green at the Houses of Parliament and at the Trocadero, Piccadilly Circus in aid of Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital.
The choir has taken part in all three "Festival of Cornish Male Choirs" events at The Royal Albert Hall. In 1988 and 1995 they gave recitals in Westminster Abbey.
The choir is primarily a concert choir and does not normally enter music competitions. However in December 1994, it entered the St. Austell Music Festival and won the "Open Male Choir Competition" being awarded the highest total choral marks over the festival as a whole. It again won the Open Male Voice Competition in 1995. More recently it took part in the 2009 International Male Voice Choir Festival, coming second in their class of over 40 singers. less
