The choir was established in 1996 (originally in the Lehava High School for Girls) by singer/choral conductor Nomi Teplow with the goal of bringing together girls with musical ability to work on a highly professional level and produce a wide variety of vocal music. The choir is comprised of 25-30 girls from areas throughout Samaria ranging in age from 13-18 years.
The Shir-El choir performs in concerts and at vocal conventions across the country bringing fine singing, rich harmonies and words of hope, faith and love of Israel to a broad range of audiences. The Shir E-l Choir has won first place several times in the national choral competition for high school choirs sponsored by the Israel Ministry of Education. The choir's repertoire includes traditional and contemporary Jewish music, Israeli music, classical, and world music, from ancient Biblical texts to African chants and Walt Disney songs.
Girls are admitted to the choir after an audition process. From that moment on, the girls are absorbed into a supportive family and embark upon an experience that goes far beyond song. The choir teaches the girls correct vocal production, ear training, multi-voiced singing and artistic musical expression. In addition, the girls are trained to be effective performers which includes appropriate behavior and discipline on stage, communication with the audience, relaxation and connection of mind/soul and body in order to completely give of oneself to the audience, creative thought and creative movement.
A major contributor to the choir’s musical success is the emphasis placed on teamwork, mutual respect and caring. The girls participate in special workshops and evening activities that promote team spirit and help produce a cohesive, integrated, fun-loving and non-competitive group. The choir is particularly important to girls who are recent immigrants, or to those who are academically and otherwise challenged. It gives the girls a sense of belonging and strengthens their self-confidence.
