Since 1998, this successful and renowned choir has been directed by Matthias Beckert, conductor and lecturer in choral conducting at the University of Music Würzburg. Based on its top-class choral performances, the Monteverdi Choir Würzburg has been highly praised both in professional circles and by the media.
The Monteverdi Choir Würzburg has developed a wide concert repertoire, including major oratorio works from the Renaissance up until the present day. The choir’s performance and versatility is proven through its participation in numerous Würzburg premieres and reputable concerts with period instruments.
As part of the Würzburg Mozart Festival 2006, the Jubilee Concert featured the Monteverdi Choir Würzburg singing works by the festival's founder Herman Zilcher. In the same year, they released a recording of Heinrich von Herzogenberg’s oratorio ‘The Birth of Christ’ under the international record label, cpo (Classic Produktion Osnabrück). Thanks to its constant high level and long-term outstanding achievement, the choir was awarded the 2007 culture medal by the City of Würzburg. In his laudation Prof. Dr. Klaus Toyka thanked the choir and their director for their outstanding achievements.
To mark its 15th anniversary, the Monteverdichor Würzburg performed the epic oratorio ‘The Book with Seven Seals’ by Franz Schmidt. In 2008, the choir presented a concert in memory of the city of Würzburg in March 16, 1945 and framed the celebratory opening event of the University of Würzburg’s alumni celebrations.
In 2009, the Monteverdi Choir Würzburg was rated “excellent” in the Bavarian Choir Competition in Munich. At the German Choir Competition 2010 in Dortmund, the Monteverdi Choir was again rated as “excellent” and can now claim to be one of the best choirs in the whole of Germany after being awarded the prestigious second prize.
In 2010 the choir successfully released Zsolt Gárdonyi’s “Annunciation” under the record label Spektral , as well as the "Missa S.P. Benedicti" by Johann Valentin Rathgeber, under the label cpo.
In 2010 the Monteverdi Choir continued its series of Würzburg premieres with Cesar Franck’s Oratorio “Les Béatitudes” for Priest Georg Häfner and Father Engelmar Unzeitig, who both lost their life in the concentration camp at Dachau. They also sung under the baton of the famous composer and conductor Krzysztof Penderecki, performing his masterpiece, “Seven Gates of Jerusalem” in Würzburg and Rzeszów (Polen). less - Location: KHG, Hofstallstrasse 4, Würzburg, Germany  [map]
