Follow the footsteps of Victoria with members of the Tallis Scholars.
Choral music that would have been sung by Victoria when he was a boy chorister in Avila Cathedral.
Tomás Luis de Victoria began his musical career as a chorister in Avila Cathedral under the direction of Bernardino de Ribera, before being awarded a grant by Philip II to study in Rome, where he would spend the next twenty years of his life, as student, maestro de capilla and priest.
This course will take works that appear in various Spanish sources from the first part of the XVIth century, especially from the composers of the Capilla Flamenca of Carlos V, and Victoria’s maestros Bernardino and Navarro, that Tomás may well have sung as a boy during his time at Avila Cathedral, imprinting the first musical influences on the composer who signed himself ”Abvlensis”. There will also be some works by Victoria himself.

The week includes various activities in the programme:
Individual vocal technique sessions. Each student should bring a prepared piece to work on applied vocal technique with the teachers on a one to one basis.
Group vocal technique sessions. These are held with the various teachers, including warmups, posture considerations, breathing, relaxation techniques, etc.
Individual masterclass (optional, only for those students who specifically apply for it, with a maximum of 12). The student will perform a piece of their own election with piano, while the various teachers make observations relating to style, interpretation, etc. Other course students sit in on these sessions.
Full choir sessions. The whole group rehearses the sacred music programme.
Small groups or “consort” sessions. So that the students become accustomed to singing alone or with just one or two singers per part, within a small group that will work on other works of the period, under the direction of the teachers.
Students that come as pre-formed groups will also be able to work in their own group.
