Choir offers extension group and scholarships

  • Singing in a choir is fun, it builds teamwork and confidence in people as they work together to accomplish a common goal. Singing also shares something unique from all other musical instruments: words. This means it is a powerful tool for memory and speech in children.

It also brings physical benefits such as  increased concentration due to increased oxygenation.

Hutt Valley’s Major Minors Children’s Choir started  on Sunday 31 January and we have a fantastic year of singing planned ahead including performances at Staglands, Golder Cottage in the community, their own concerts , competitions and singing with other choirs. We are always looking for opportunities for the kids to perform.

The choir continues to grow and as well as catering for children 4 and up there is an auditioned choir The Harmonic Minors who work on more challenging part work and their own repertoire on top of the main choir. The Harmonic Minors gives extension work for older children and teens, building the choir sound while also working on their own personal voices. Musical Director Joanne Roelofs says “Both choirs sing a huge variety of music, there are also opportunities for solos, we have a great culture of fun and encouragement in our rehearsals. Kids don’t need to be able to read music to be in either choir”.

The choir is also offering 5 scholarships for 2016- for those that may be experiencing financial hardship. Applications have been extended and now close Saturday 12 February.

To find out more about the choirs who rehearse on Sundays in Upper Hutt or to apply for the scholarships go to the Major Minors website majorminors.instantencore.com , or email hvkidschoir@gmail.com
